The Hope Community Services (HCS) is governed by a local, volunteer board of directors. The Board of Directors is vital to the success of our organization. HCS board members are passionate about the mission and are committed to making a difference in a child’s life. Being a board member for HCS is a serious and gratifying commitment.
Board Member Responsibilities
Leadership, governance and oversight:
- Establish, jointly with the President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), HCS’s policies and oversee policy implementation;
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the President & CEO as s/he develops and implements the HCS’s strategic plan;
- Ensure HCS has sufficient capital, facilities, staff and equipment to effectively implement policies and contractual agreements;
- Review and approve the annual budget, audit reports, business contracts as outlined in the finance policies;
- Ensure agency compliance with relevant federal, state and local laws;
- Contribute to an annual performance evaluation of the President & CEO;
- Assist in the recruitment of other board members;
- Partner with the President & CEO and other board members to ensure board resolutions are carried out; and
- Act as an ambassador for HCS by representing the agency to stakeholders.
- Make a personal and meaningful annual gift to HCS;
- Set a personal fundraising goal and work diligently to secure funds annually;
- Approve an annual fundraising plan and ensure that an adequate budget is established to support that plan;
- Participate and support all major benefit functions and special events by assisting with securing raffle/silent auction items;
- Recognize supporters and donors through personal visits, notes, and phone calls; and
- Identify and cultivate prospective donors, and help solicit those donors as appropriate.
Participation and commitment:
- Complete a three-year board term;
- Attend and actively participate in scheduled (no less than quarterly) board of directors meetings;
- Attend annual October planning retreat;
- Serve on one specialty committee; and
- Voice concerns, ask questions, and fully participate in all discussions regarding the business of HCS; agree and dissent when appropriate
Ideal candidate qualifications:
- Individuals who are passionate about HCS’s mission and helping children in Arizona;
- Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector;
- A commitment to and understanding of the HCS’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience;
- Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals; and
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of HCS’s beneficiaries.
